M N Venkatachaliah was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India during 1993-1994. Post retirement, he served as Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission during 1996-1998 and chaired the National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution during 2000-2002. He was awarded the Padma Vibushan, the highest civilian honour in India after the Bharat Ratna, in 2004. Justice Venkatachaliah has been actively engaged in the cause of anti-corruption for the past several years.
